Statement by EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, on the occasion of the election of Chun-ying LEUNG as the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, SAR

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, made today the following statement:

"I wish to extend my congratulations on your election as Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 25 March 2012.

Hong Kong is an important partner for the EU and shares values of openness, tolerance and respect for fundamental freedoms. The European Union attaches great importance to Hong Kong's stability, economic prosperity and democratic development and, in accordance with the basic law of the Hong Kong SAR and the wishes of the people of Hong Kong, supports substantial progress towards the goal of universal suffrage in 2017.

Let me extend to you my best wishes for the prosperity, stability and democratic development of Hong Kong and for the further deepening of EU and Hong Kong relations during your term in office."
