Interfilière Hong Kong 2012, The New Beauty

March 29-30, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hall 5G

The sixth Interfilière Hong Kong opens at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 29-30 March, 2012. With the phenomenal success of the past five consecutive years, it is proven that Hong Kong remains an important strategic location for intimate apparel. This year, there are a total of 170 exhibitors joining the Interfilière, with a 10% increase in the exhibition area compared to 2011. Exhibitors are offering a wide range of supplies for the intimate apparel industry, and a number of companies are proposing manufacturing capacity (a number that has tripled compared to 2011). 44 companies will exhibit for the first time at the Interfiliere Hong Kong, while many of them have developed tools and technologies to meet both environmental and fashion related challenges.

Along the lines of the Paris Interfilière, the exhibition in Hong Kong was renamed for this session to Interfiliere Hong Kong. The goal is clear; it is to be included in the annual sourcing calendar of the intimate apparel and swimwear industry. Its slogan “Trace the Origin” brings the focus to the products and their materials.

Interfilière Hong Kong Trends Forum, the first steps towards Fall/Winter 2013/14

The exhibition trends forum will showcase the latest innovations by exhibiting companies in 4 themes in the centre of the hall. These themes are extracts of the latest Evolution Guide 19 – Fall/Winter 2013-2014 Trends, they are:

Light and Luxe: This trend is about re-interpretation of intimate memories and forgotten skills with new technology. It is a big revival of French style, detailed, light and frivolous. Lingerie should be delightfully intimate and precious. Adoption of delicate powdery colors with a hint of decadence.

Soft and Cosy: This trend is about dreaming of a world where the magic of transformation is reality. Inspiration comes from a dream where the old rules and codes do not apply, a world only creativity and playfulness that counts.

Structured: Inspired by modernism in 20s, 50s and 60s, this trend is about the growing need for humility with regards to resources. The focus is on using modern technology for inspiration. Not only for comfort and construction, but also as an imaginary source. Pixels, fractals and the onslaught of 3D technology boggle the mind. Technology is translated into a new direction of beauty.

Dramatic: Black is the new black with fantasies and dreams. This trend is about sweet romanticism and flowers metamorphose into erotic phantoms. Black seduction is decorated and embellished in refinement and sophistication exuding surprises and effects.

Interfilière Hong Kong also collaborated with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on a design project “The Idol”. Undergraduates were asked to trace back the roots of lingerie and to create half prototypes and inspirational boards. Inspired by Hollywood films and elegance in French lingerie traditions, the students took this concept further in personal adaptations.

All of themes are developed in more details in the Evolution 19 guide book available for the first time in Hong Kong. Previously, first launched in Paris exhibitions, this practical and essential trends guidebook (priced at HK$2,550 and on sale at the exhibition) decodes the trends for Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 featuring samples of the major colors set to drive the upcoming key looks of the season.

Would lingerie become a fashion item in HK and China?

This year, Interfiliere Hong Kong conducted a survey on women lingerie buying habits in Hong Kong, Shanghai and France. 90% of the women respondents were aged between 21 to 40 and, 57% between 15 to 50 in France. A young population, interested in fashion items, and active in lingerie buying; they are the target groups of lingerie brands. The highest spenders are the French women (with an average of 974 HKD per year). Hong Kong women will have a diversified behavior to lingerie buying, and Shanghainese will be more focused on lower budgets.

The survey shows that the structure of the retail market for lingerie offers a different shopping experience, whether it’s in Hong Kong, Shanghai or France. Still lingerie is becoming more of a fashion item than it used to be in Asia, women tend to own more sets than in France. It is to be noted that on-line lingerie shopping is more developed in China (17.5%) than Hong Kong (7.3%).

China turns out to be the most conscious with matching lingerie with their outfits which translates into opportunities for lingerie brands. Brands start to consider showing end-consumers the matching of the lingerie with their outfits as a total look in order to increase sales.

Top 5 colors for Shanghai and Hong Kong turn out to be the same: Black. It is the most preferred color, followed by nude and/or pastel colors. Red seems to remain a special occasion item.
